History of Christmas Day

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, observed by Christians worldwide on December 25. Christianity reached Bengal with Portuguese traders and missionaries in the sixteenth century, and some of the region’s oldest churches — including the Holy Rosary Church at Tejgaon in Dhaka, founded in 1677 — date from that era.

In Bangladesh the day is known as Borodin (“the Big Day”) and is a national public holiday. While Christians make up a small community, the celebration is warm and visible: churches hold midnight mass and morning services, homes are decorated with stars and cribs, and hotels and shopping areas across Dhaka join in the festive spirit.
