Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal — a date also remembered as the day of his passing. Public celebration of the Mawlid grew from the Fatimid era in Egypt around the eleventh century and spread across the Muslim world, taking deep root in the devotional culture of Bengal.
In Bangladesh the day is a public holiday, observed with milad mahfils — gatherings of praise, biography, and blessings on the Prophet — held in mosques, homes, and public spaces. Jashne Julus processions fill the streets of Dhaka, Chattogram, and other cities; the Chattogram julus has grown into a procession of several lakh people.
