History of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi
Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal. The same date is also remembered as the day of his passing. Public celebration of the Mawlid grew from the Fatimid era in Egypt, around the eleventh century, and spread across the Muslim world. It took deep root in the devotional culture of Bengal.
In Bangladesh the day is a public holiday. Milad mahfils are held in mosques, homes and public places, where people gather to hear the Prophet's life story, sing his praise and send blessings on him. Jashne Julus processions fill the streets of Dhaka, Chattogram and other cities, and the Chattogram julus now draws several lakh people.
