Birth Rashi & Nakshatra Calculator

Enter a date and time of birth to find the moon's rashi and nakshatra at that moment, along with the tithi, sun rashi and the naming syllable panjikas assign to each nakshatra pada.

How this is calculated

The moon travels the full zodiac in about 27 days. The rashi is the 30° sign it occupies at the moment of birth, and the nakshatra is the 13°20′ star division. Each nakshatra has four padas of 3°20′, and Bengali panjikas link a starting syllable for a child's name to each pada.

Positions are sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is what panjikas and Indian astrology use. Western horoscopes use tropical signs, which sit about 24° ahead, so a sun sign from a newspaper column will often differ from the surya rashi shown here.

The result depends on the exact time. Near a nakshatra or rashi boundary, a difference of an hour can change the answer, so give the time as precisely as the birth record allows and pick the time zone of the birthplace.
