History of Shab-e-Qadr
Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power, is the night on which the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran gives it a whole surah, Al-Qadr, which calls the night “better than a thousand months.” It falls on one of the odd nights in the last ten days of Ramadan, and the 27th night is the one most widely observed.
In Bangladesh, Shab-e-Qadr is observed on the night after the 26th day of Ramadan, and the following day is a public holiday. Mosques overflow with worshippers who spend the whole night in prayer. Many also observe itikaf, a retreat in the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan, in the hope of receiving the blessings of this night.
