History of Shab-e-Qadr

Laylatul Qadr — the Night of Power or Night of Destiny — is the night the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Quran devotes an entire surah (Al-Qadr) to it, declaring the night “better than a thousand months.” It falls on one of the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, with the 27th night most widely observed.

In Bangladesh, Shab-e-Qadr is observed on the night following the 26th day of Ramadan and is a public holiday. Mosques overflow with worshippers who spend the entire night in prayer, and many observe itikaf — a spiritual retreat in the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan — hoping to catch the blessings of this greatest of nights.

How Shab-e-Qadr Is Celebrated

  • Itikaf: spiritual retreat in the mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan
  • Seeking forgiveness with the special dua taught by the Prophet for this night
  • Waqf and charity, multiplied in reward on this night
  • Special munajat (congregational supplication) before dawn
