History of Independence Day

On the night of 25 March 1971 the Pakistani army launched the brutal crackdown known as Operation Searchlight. In the early hours of 26 March the independence of Bangladesh was declared. The declaration was broadcast from Chattogram and repeated from the Kalurghat radio station, calling the nation to resist. A nine-month Liberation War followed and ended in victory on 16 December 1971.

March 26 has been observed as Independence Day since 1972 and is one of the most solemn national days of Bangladesh. It honors both the declaration of independence and the millions who sacrificed their lives in the war that secured it. The day opens with a gun salute and tributes at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar.
