History of Eid-ul-Adha

Eid-ul-Adha remembers the devotion of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) at God's command. As he raised the knife, God put a ram in Ismail's place. Muslims have performed the sacrifice, qurbani, ever since. The festival falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, at the close of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

In Bangladesh it is widely called Kurbani Eid and is the second biggest religious festival of the year. In the weeks before Eid, cattle markets (haats) spring up across the country, and the trade in sacrificial animals becomes a large seasonal economy. By custom the meat is divided into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor.

How Eid-ul-Adha Is Celebrated

  • Eid prayers in congregation, followed by the sacrifice of cattle, goats, or camels
  • Dividing the qurbani meat into three shares: family, relatives, and the poor
  • Busy cattle haats in the days before Eid, with a festival economy of their own
  • Festive beef and mutton dishes, from rezala to kala bhuna
  • Homecoming journeys as city dwellers return to their villages for the holidays
