Shab-e-Barat is fixed by the sighting of the Shaban crescent. The Islamic Foundation announces the date on the evening of 29 Rajab, which should be Friday 8 January. If Shaban starts a day later, the night moves to Sunday 24 January and the holiday to Monday 25 January.
In 2026 the night was Tuesday 3 February with the holiday on 4 February. The date moves about eleven days earlier each year.
How the night is observed. Mosques in Bangladesh stay open through the night for nafl prayers, Quran recitation and visits to graveyards. Households make halwa and ruti to share with neighbours, a tradition specific to Bengal and parts of northern India. Many people fast the next day.

Lailatul Qadr, the Night of Power, is not tied to a fixed date in the Quran. The hadith point to the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan, and the 27th night is the one Bangladesh marks with a holiday.

The 29th night is also Chand Raat, when the Shawwal moon is looked for. If Ramadan runs 30 days, there is one more night on Tuesday 9 March.
Prayer times for the vigils
In Dhaka on 23 January, Isha is at 6:57 pm and Fajr the next morning at 5:27 am, giving about ten and a half hours for the night. On 6 March, Isha is at 7:18 pm and Fajr at 5:04 am. Exact times for every district are on the prayer times pages, and the Ramadan calendar has sehri and iftar for all thirty days.
Both nights in the 2027 holiday list
Shab-e-Barat on Sunday 24 January gives a three-day weekend from Friday 22 January. Shab-e-Qadr on Sunday 7 March follows Jumatul Wida on Friday 5 March, so that weekend runs Friday to Sunday, and Eid comes three days later. The full year is in the 2027 holiday list post.
