How to Type in Bengali on Windows, Mac, and Mobile

BanglaDateToday
Typing in Bengali (বাংলা) used to mean installing special software and hunting for fonts. Today every major platform ships with Bengali support built in — you just need to pick a method and switch it on. Here's how to do that on Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone.

Why Bother Setting Up a Bengali Keyboard?

Bengali is the 7th most spoken language in the world, with over 230 million native speakers in Bangladesh and West Bengal. Even so, a lot of Bengali text online is still typed the hard way — spelled out in English letters, or stuck in old ANSI fonts that break the moment you paste them somewhere else. A proper keyboard setup takes about five minutes and fixes both problems.

A Quick Note on the Script

The Bengali script (বাংলা লিপি) has 11 vowels (স্বরবর্ণ), 39 consonants (ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ), diacritical marks (কার চিহ্ন), and conjunct consonants (যুক্তাক্ষর). The conjuncts are what make Bengali harder to type than English, and they're where the input methods below differ the most.

Methods for Bengali Typing

1. Phonetic Input (Avro Keyboard)

The most popular method for beginners is phonetic typing, where you type Bengali using English letters that sound similar to Bengali pronunciation.

Example: Type ami banglay gan gai to get আমি বাংলায় গান গাই.

Popular Phonetic Tools: Avro Keyboard (Windows, Mac, Linux), Google Input Tools, and Ridmik Keyboard (Android).

2. Fixed Layout Keyboards

For faster typing, many professionals prefer fixed layout keyboards like Bijoy (common in Bangladesh), Inscript (standard in India), and Probhat.

3. Unicode vs. ANSI

  • Unicode (Recommended): The universal standard that works across all modern platforms without font dependency issues. Essential for web content.
  • ANSI (Legacy): An older standard that requires specific fonts (like SutonnyMJ for Bijoy) and is still used in some print media.

Platform-Specific Setup

Windows

  • Avro Keyboard: Download from avro.im, install, and use F12 to switch between English and Bengali.
  • Windows Built-in: Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language, add Bengali, and use Win+Space to switch.

macOS

Go to System Preferences → Keyboard → Input Sources, click '+' to add Bengali (Phonetic or QWERTY), and use Cmd+Space to switch.

Mobile Devices (Android/iOS)

Both platforms support Bengali out of the box. On Android, Gboard and Ridmik Keyboard are the usual choices. On iOS, add the Bengali keyboard from Settings → General → Keyboard.

Which Method Should You Pick?

  • New to Bengali typing? Start with a phonetic keyboard like Avro. You already know how to spell Bengali words in English letters, so there's almost nothing to learn.
  • Typing Bengali all day? A fixed layout like Bijoy or Probhat is worth the few weeks it takes to learn — phonetic typing costs extra keystrokes on every word, and it caps your speed. The conjunct (যুক্তাক্ষর) shortcuts are the part worth drilling.

Common Challenges and Solutions

  • Conjunct Consonants: Complex combinations like ক্ষ (kkho) or জ্ঞ (gyo) can be tricky. Learn the specific key combinations or use phonetic shortcuts.
  • Font Display Issues: If text appears as boxes, install proper Unicode fonts like Kalpurush, SolaimanLipi, or Noto Sans Bengali.
One last thing: if you have old documents typed in Bijoy or another ANSI-era layout, they won't paste cleanly into modern apps. Run them through our converter first.Need to convert old text? Use our Converter
